Africa Day 2026 in the Netherlands: Celebrating Unity and Partnership

26 May 2026 – In a festive atmosphere marked by friendship, solidarity and cultural exchange, African Ambassadors accredited to the Kingdom of the Netherlands gathered to celebrate Africa Day 2026, showcasing the unity and close collaboration that characterize the African diplomatic community based in The Hague.

His Excellency Mr. Vusimuzi Madonsela, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the international organizations based in The Hague, warmly welcomed distinguished guests and members of the diplomatic community among them the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, H.E. Mrs. Sahar Ghanem, Ambassador of Yemen. On behalf of the African Union, welcoming remarks were delivered by H.E. Ms. Karoline Chipeta, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The celebration took place under the theme proclaimed by the African Union for 2026: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” By elevating water and sanitation to a continental political priority, the theme recognizes their central role in promoting economic transformation, climate resilience, public health, food security and regional stability across Africa.

Guest of Honour, H.E. Mr. Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation

The keynote address was delivered by the Guest of Honour, H.E. Mr. Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. In his remarks, he highlighted the Dutch government’s growing cooperation with the African Union under the Netherlands Africa Strategy 2023–2032, which seeks to move beyond traditional aid relationships towards partnerships based on equality, mutual interests and shared responsibilities. The strategy operates within the broader AU–EU Partnership framework and closely aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision for sustainable development and prosperity.

The event was introduced by the Director of Proceedings, Ms. Louisa Fofie. Traditionally held at the historic Kasteel de Wittenburg, home of the Diplomat Club Wassenaar, the annual Africa Day celebration has become one of the most cherished diplomatic and cultural gatherings in the Netherlands. The occasion highlights the richness, diversity and vibrancy of the African continent while underscoring the strong and enduring relations between Africa and the Netherlands.

Guests enjoyed the warm hospitality of the hosts and a carefully curated culinary experience featuring flavours from across the African continent, reflecting its cultural diversity and traditions.

As Africa Day celebrations unfolded across the continent and throughout the diaspora, the gathering in the Netherlands stood out as a vibrant tribute to Africa’s achievements, diversity and aspirations. Above all, it served as a powerful testament to the spirit of unity and close collaboration among the African Ambassadors in The Hague and to the growing partnership between Africa and the Netherlands in advancing shared goals for a prosperous and sustainable future.
