Peru’s Tall Ship B.A.P. Unión Showcases Maritime Heritage at Sail Amsterdam 2025

Amid the grandeur of Sail Amsterdam 2025, one ship captured hearts and minds with her powerful presence and deep cultural resonance—Peru’s majestic B.A.P. UNIÓN. As part of her Midshipmen Training Deployment 2025, the UNIÓN docked in Amsterdam, carrying with her not only the future leaders of the Peruvian Navy but also the living spirit of a seafaring nation.

On the evening of Friday, August 22, 2025, the Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Ms. Franca Lorella Deza Ferreccio, and the Commanding Officer of the UNIÓN, Captain Juan José Roncagliolo Gómez, welcomed distinguished guests aboard the ship for a memorable diplomatic reception. Held on deck against the spectacular backdrop of Amsterdam’s historic harbor, the event was a celebration of Peru’s maritime heritage, naval excellence, and international friendship.

Mrs. Franca DEZA – Ambassador of Perú to the Kingdom of the Netherlands; H.E. Mr. Alexander Kofman – Ambassador of the Netherlands in Perú; Rear Admiral, Mr. César MAURICIO – Representative of the Peruvian Navy; Captain, Mr. Javier OLIVARES – Peruvian Naval Attaché in France and the Netherlands

Throughout the reception, guests explored the vessel’s impressive architecture and historical symbolism. Built entirely in Peru using native materials and traditional craftsmanship, the B.A.P. UNIÓN stood as a floating testament to national pride. Her figurehead, modeled after Inca leader Tupac Yupanqui, and her name, honoring the heroic corvette “Unión” from the Pacific War of 1879, echoed Peru’s enduring values of strength, unity, and resilience.

The ship’s visit to the Netherlands was not only a key part of her 2025 training voyage, but also a diplomatic gesture—an opportunity to strengthen cultural and trade relations between Peru and the Netherlands. Onboard exhibitions featured handcrafted Peruvian goods, native textiles, and regional delicacies, showcasing the richness of Peru’s cultural and economic contributions to the world.

Since her commissioning, the UNIÓN has served as a training vessel for naval cadets, offering real-world experience in navigation, leadership, and international engagement. Her presence at Sail Amsterdam—one of the world’s most celebrated maritime festivals, with ten thousand participating ships and millions of visitors over four days—affirmed her stature as a distinguished ambassador of Peru on the global stage

With sails aloft and hearts full, the B.A.P. UNIÓN left a lasting impression on all who stepped aboard—reminding the world that Peru’s identity is deeply tied to the ocean, and that its message of unity continues to sail far beyond its shores.

Peru was here—at sea, in spirit, and in friendship.
