A New Cultural Bridge: The Launch of the Eurasian Council for Craft & Design (ECCD)

On March 25, in the picturesque and historic Keizersgracht district of Amsterdam, an inspiring new chapter in global creative collaboration was unveiled with the official launch of the Eurasian Council for Craft & Design (ECCD). The distinguished gathering brought together an eclectic mix of diplomats, designers, artisans, and cultural representatives, all united by a shared vision: fostering dialogue and collaboration across Eurasia’s rich cultural landscape.

Founded in The Hague, ECCD emerges as a forward-thinking platform dedicated to bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. By connecting artisans, designers, and institutions, the Council seeks not only to preserve heritage but also to amplify the global visibility of craftspeople and support their integration into the international creative economy.

The Council’s founding members reflect its international spirit and diversity. Mr. Aziz Murtazaev of Uzbekistan, Ms. Aslı Sarı of the Netherlands, Mrs. Dilek Taşdemir-Kalkan of Türkiye, and Ms. Dameli Zhanasheva and Mr. Aidarkhan Kaliyev of Kazakhstan bring together a wealth of perspectives, experiences, and cultural insights that shape ECCD’s mission.

One of the evening’s highlights was a captivating fashion presentation by Aidarkhan Kaliyev. His collection masterfully intertwined traditional motifs with modern aesthetics, demonstrating the powerful possibilities that emerge when heritage meets innovation. The pieces were developed in collaboration with PERADA BATIK of Indonesia, further emphasizing ECCD’s commitment to cross-cultural exchange.

The presence of H.E. Mr. Akan Rakhmetullin, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, added diplomatic weight to the occasion, underscoring the broader significance of cultural initiatives in strengthening international relations.

Looking ahead, ECCD announced its upcoming international program, signaling an ambitious roadmap to connect Eurasian heritage with global creative industries. With its launch, the Council sets the stage for a dynamic future—one where tradition and innovation coexist, and where creative voices from across Eurasia find a stronger presence on the world stage.

As ECCD begins its journey, it carries with it a compelling vision: to celebrate craftsmanship not only as a cultural legacy but as a vibrant, evolving force within today’s global creative economy.
